  1. There was an article in the local news recently, which contains a brief table comparing how autistic children are being treated in the US vs Israel vs Hong Kong. Someone left a comment saying that autistic children are being treated as gifted persons in Israel. I know the intent was to highlight that HK falls way behind Israel in autism awareness but something about the comment is unsettling. First of all, while I agree that autism is a gift, I don’t consider myself a gifted person and autism is a spectrum, we have different functioning levels and abilities. Second, I don’t see how the emphasis on being gifted will contribute to raising autism awareness. Sure, we need people to recognise our abilities but the idea that all autistics are gifted or have savant abilities is just another misconception. Gifted or not, we all have a right to be treated humanely and with dignity, this has nothing to do with our intellectual abilities.

    1. I don’t like the idea of autism as a “gift” anymore than a “disorder”. EVERY human has some kind of gift. Even if it’s something like making perfect pancakes. Autism just *is*. Some people are born left-handed, some people are born autistic. The world isn’t very accommodating to either.

  2. Very well said – I really liked: there is no hierarchy of humanity, no test that one must pass to be worthy of recognition as a human being. Our worth is inherent. And never, ever subject to comparison.
Nice re-blog. Defintely good to point out and think about.
