If you missed the start of this series, you can find it here. A lot of things will be the same or very similar.
The rest of last night was continued mellow. I started taking pictures around 5:30pm. Daughter gave Ben his meds, he’d been reenacting something, probably Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where Willy Wonka slams face first into the glass Wonkavator. He’d covered his face with a reddish chalk dust and was leaving marks on my mirrored closet door. He was winding himself up, cuz he was tired. He followed me outside when I was taking my Sciencey Stuff pictures and settled in his dirt hole. I wound up brushing and rebraiding his hair in the dirt hole, cuz he fights less if he’s got his mind on something else.
I ran his bath at 6pm, still periodically Gathering Data. He was ready to get clean and go to bed, so I herded him into the Bath Room, into the tub and got him cleaned up. Then I finished taking pictures while he played. I started editing them, cropping out the flares and spots, and missed the end of intermission. With the door closed and the AC blasting, I have no idea what’s happening outside. Daughter got The Boys tucked into bed and I covered Mr Grumpy Beard.
Then I did the Night Things and all the Stuff, ate my BBQ popcorn chicken and took my pill around 11:30pm, wondering how it got so late.
I woke to the 6:30 med alarm going off. It took me a bit to find my phone and turn the dang thing off. Then I listened… it was quiet. Cool! Daughter came down the hall a couple minutes later with her stuff. We were both amazed that HRH was still asleep. She continued to the baño and I snuggled deeper into my blankets and enjoyed the quiet.
Less than a minute later the slamming open of Ben’s bedroom door and the pounding of his footsteps down the hall was heard. Ben went straight to the baño and kicked Daughter out, Zeus came straight to me for some ear sniffing. Ben soon joined us in bed, spooning me and being sweet for like thirty seconds. That’s an eternity in Ben Time. My Daily Allotted Sweetness over, he went back to the living room to hang out with Daughter… and I dozed back off.
He woke me up once for new earbuds. I’d just given him new ones yesterday, sheesh! We buy cheap ones in the biggest, least expensive pack. They are always tangled and he drags them and basically they get broken easily. Anyway, I gave him the second to last set and laid back down. I only vaguely remember getting up and asking why he needed new ones already cuz I konked right back out.
I finally woke up and stayed awake at the unheard of time of 9:30am. NINE – THIRTY! Whoa! I stayed in bed and listened to Dogzilla snoring next to me and Daughter asking Ben “help with what?” several times. I decided to stay quiet and not announce that I was awake yet. I had another half hour of quiet before I got up. Daughter gave me a report… she’d uncovered Sven and fed him fresh greens and blackberries cut in half. He ate part of one half and left the other laying on the substrate. I told her that the blackberries were kinda big, I usually cut them in thirds, but half is fine, and thanked her for taking care of Sven while I slept. (He’s supposed to be a House or Family pet, but his care generally falls to me.) When I got my coffee I saw that Zeus’ bowl was empty so I gave him a scoop of kibble. Daughter said he hadn’t left my room all morning so she hadn’t fed him. Silly Dog! Very loyal, but silly.
Ben had his 10:30am meds, then he decided it was Arts and Crafts time. He kept bringing me stuff to tape together at intervals spaced just far enough apart to be annoyingly interrupting. The last one was taping one more wrapped Starburst candy to the bottom of a stack of them. We were creating “Fox Searchlight Pictures” searchlights.
The morning goes by fast when it doesn’t start until 10am. And the afternoon was mellow and relaxed. Daughter ordered Jersey Mike’s, so I had a #13 waiting for me to want to eat. I never heard Daughter mention anything related to “computer school” or talking to his teachers… I think she’s completely over the whole Zoom fiasco and isn’t letting his teacher guilt her into trying to force Ben to participate. It might be just this week, while it’s still hot, but I fully support a Zoom-free zone.
Ben was hanging out with me and Zeus, watching his tablet and munching on poofs. Daughter came in to give him his half Adderall and made him scootch over so she could cuddle him. He didn’t want to move and he’s not a cuddler by nature, but he tolerated it for a minute or so then told Daughter “Mom, I done.” She sighed, said okay and got up.
A little while later Ben asked me to go to the living room. I told him he could go, Mom was out there. So he took his tablet and went. I heard Daughter talking to him and suggesting they have a “movie date” in her room tonight. Have dinner and popcorn and watch a movie on her laptop in her room. All Ben heard was “popcorn”. He suddenly wanted popcorn and he wanted it right then. He went and got a pack of microwave popcorn to show he was serious about wanting the popcorn. Daughter told him she’d make it, but he had to move his stuff from in front of the microwave.
He wandered around holding onto the package, he didn’t seem to understand her statement. When he came to me I told him “Mom will make the popcorn as soon as you move the searchlights away from the microwave.” I guess that phrasing clicked for him cuz he went and moved them.
Daughter made the popcorn and asked if he wanted the bag or if he wanted it in a bowl. He chose bowl and he also chose Mom’s room. He was ready for the movie date right then. Daughter was protesting at first, she planned on doing it later. I told her she better take advantage of it now, gotta do stuff on Ben’s time. She realized there was no reason not to do it now and gathered her stuff and took it to her room, where Ben was waiting. She had to come back out to get his 2:30pm meds since it was 2:45pm by the time all this was settled.
I stayed in my room, going through my WP reader and generally relaxing. I heard Ben laughing every so often, Daughter had planned to watch Coraline, a movie that Ben really likes, but hasn’t seen in a while.
They came out around 4:30 and settled in the living room. It really makes me happy when Ben and Daughter spend time together and get along. It’s the way it should be. I was never supposed to be his primary caregiver, and I don’t want to be. I have my own plans for my own future… things I want to do.
White chicken is on the menu for tonight’s dinner. Dinner will be served at approximately 5:30 with a side of night meds. Dinner will be followed by a bath and bedtime. That’s the plan anyway… plans are subject to Ben’s whims, Mr Murphy and his cousin Sod and random acts of chaos. YMMV.
I found this scrolling through my YouTube feed. I like it! It’s got a bit of Latin to the beat, and the video is cute. Let me know what you think.
What a great day at Casa Cuckoo!! Unfortunately, Daughter returns to work Friday night and that means laundry and a probable visit to the laundromat. I’m still not sure if the Quarter Lady is my new bestie or if she’s smiling to distract me from the knife she’s going to bury in my back… metaphorically, of course. Quarter Lady encounter or not, there will be Driving Miss Daisy and the pressure of The Schedule. Hopefully Ben will continue being relaxed and mellow, and we won’t have any drama. I guess we’ll find out tomorrow. No two days are ever the same. It’s always an Adventure, even when it’s an adventure in sleeping. ¡Hasta mañana!
