Autism Awareness week UK.

Most people have heard of Autism. There is some awareness, but not nearly enough.
There are some great blogs that deal with the truth of caring for an autistic child, and how heartbreaking it can feel to not be able to “fix” whatever in “wrong” in the child’s world.
There are also many blogs written by autistic adults, explaining about being autistic.

“Awareness” isn’t aware enough…

Our Autism Blog

Today marks the start of Autism Awareness Week.
I am passionate about sharing the reality of ‘our autism’, and highlighting just how much of a dark place it can be.
There are so many blogs out there about Autism, but very few talk about the dark side that we experience.
Very few detail the meltdowns, the violence, the devastating effects it can have in family life.
I have been called brave for talking about it.
I’m not brave. At. All.
I just want to raise awareness of how Autism can look to the public.
I want to show you that not all children misbehaving in supermarkets, for example, are spoilt children.

Today I saw a status on Facebook which shook me to my core.
I thought we were getting there, I thought people were beginning to understand….

“A child was running amock and screaming
The mother then tried to use…

  1. Thank you for sharing the blog and for sharing your experiences. I follow a few blogs about autism, so will add this one too. I agree with Jeff’s comments – people can be quick to judge. 💕

    1. Yep. Judgey McJudgeypants are everywhere. The thing that gets me, in her post the Facebook commenter talking about smacking a “naughty” child… even if it was a typical child having a tantrum, a smack isn’t the answer. 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️

    1. Unfortunately☹ Hopefully all of us individuals can make enough ripples to at least get some accurate information out there.
I think some of the bad info is worse than no info.🙄💌💌💌

  2. Nobody round here seems to be aware of Autism Awareness Week – actually, I think we are getting a whole month here. But yeah, this awareness thing is a tricky one.
I’m only speculating, but perhaps there is a reason for blogs etc wanting to accentuate the positive? There are so many narratives out there which purport to “tell the truth about autism” and which are of the “woe is us, autism is destroying our family” kind. People who wish they could fix what is wrong with their child (and not what is wrong with the child’s world). So perhaps some people want to present a counterweight to that and show that it’s not all doom and gloom. I think there has been so much negativity out there that the pendulum had to swing the other way for a bit. But you are right, there is a place for blogs etc that tell the truth as it is, without tipping into the doommongering. Blogs like yours.

    1. Awww, thank you!🥰 I’m glad that my writings about autism and Ben come across balanced. His meltdowns are hard, but meltdowns aren’t the entirety of who he is. He’s a goofy, unique, young (can’t say “little” anymore… he’s over 5′ tall now😲) human, who happens to be autistic.
I agree, it shouldn’t be all doom and gloom. It shouldn’t be all sunshine and roses either. I can definitely appreciate why adults and older children would want more positivity. No one wants to read only negative things about themselves and/or others like them.
