#SLS ~ Sad But True

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. All the rules and particulars for this fun prompt can be found at Jim’s site. He’s also got upcoming prompts, other musical fun, and lots of other cool stuff. Stop by, browse a little…

This week the theme is: Comparisons where you take two songs and discuss an association between them

I’ve decided to take one song performed by two different bands… two very different bands. Although they both perform in the Metal genre, one is American and the other is Mongolian. I think I’m coming at this prompt from the other way, so to speak. Instead of comparing two different songs, I’m comparing two different sounds.

It may not fit the prompt exactly, but it’s all for fun, and learning about new music, right?! If you only listen to one of the songs, I suggest The Hu’s version.

The song is Sad But True by Metallica. It was written by James Hetfield (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums). The song appears on their fifth studio album, titled Metallica, commonly known as the Black Album. It was released August 12, 1991.

Hey
I’m your life
I’m the one who takes you there

Hey
I’m your life
I’m the one who cares

They
They betray
I’m your only true friend now

They
They’ll betray
I’m forever there

I’m your dream, make you real
I’m your eyes when you must steal
I’m your pain when you can’t feel
Sad but true

I’m your dream, mind astray
I’m your eyes while you’re away
I’m your pain while you repay
You know it’s sad but true

You
You’re my mask
You’re my cover, my shelter

You
You’re my mask
You’re the one who’s blamed

Do
Do my work
Do my dirty work, scapegoat

Do
Do my deeds
For you’re the one who’s shamed

I’m your dream, make you real
I’m your eyes when you must steal
I’m your pain when you can’t feel
Sad but true

I’m your dream, mind astray
I’m your eyes while you’re away
I’m your pain while you repay
You know it’s sad but true

Hate
I’m your hate
I’m your hate when you want love

Pay
Pay the price
Pay, for nothing’s fair

Hey
I’m your life
I’m the one who took you there

Hey
I’m your life
And I no longer care

I’m your dream, make you real
I’m your eyes when you must steal
I’m your pain when you can’t feel
Sad but true

I’m your truth, telling lies
I’m your reason, alibis
I’m inside, open your eyes
I’m you
Sad but true

The second version of the song is performed by the Mongolian band called The Hu. It was released on December 4, 2020 as a single.

Wiki tells us: The Hu (stylized as The HU) is a Mongolian folk rock band formed in 2016. With traditional Mongolian instrumentation, including the Morin khuur, the Tovshuur, and Mongolian throat singing, the band calls their style of music “hunnu rock”, hu inspired by the Hunnu, an ancient Turkic/Mongol empire, known as Xiongnu in western culture. Some of the band’s lyrics include old Mongolian war cries and poetry.

The Hu’s version is sung in Mongolian, and the lyrics are slightly different when translated to English, but keep to the spirit of the song. I’m not going to include the Mongolian lyrics and translation, and make this long post longer.

.

Thanks for stopping by. I’m interested in reading what you think about The Hu.

  1. When the house wakes up, I look forward to listening to The Hu. Again, I have a topic I would write about if I were participating. I think music prompts might be the easiest thing for me to explore because so many of my memories are tied to songs.

      1. Aren’t they great?! There’s another one, Women’s Song with Lzzy Hale, its good too. All their music is good. The traditional instruments and throat singing really takes the music to another level.

    1. Check out the prompts for the upcoming weeks. Maybe there’s one you can use. Next week is “city, country, state, town, county”

Music prompts are pretty much the only ones I do. There are a few questions ones that intrigue me, but I don’t want to just do prompts.

      1. I did look at those. None of them immediately hit me like the last two. I’ll watch periodically. Prompts are good for me. I usually have a lot to write but I need a push to get started.

  2. I am well aware of Metallica, but I have not listened to all that many of there songs Angie. That was a novel idea to use the same song by two different groups and if I were to vote which one I liked best, I would go with the Mongolian band called The Hu. I liked their video better also.

    1. I agree with you. Sad But True isn’t one of my favorite Metallica songs. They have better ones, IMO. I like The Hu’s version and video much better.
The Hu has a few really great songs. The combination of the traditional instruments and throat singing, paired with the metal or rock genre is unique. Traditional music is generally interesting anyway.

I originally thought of using the song The Sound Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel and comparing it to the version by Disturbed. It’s difficult to choose which is best between those two. Both versions are so good!
I figured if I was going to take a different interpretation of the prompt, I better bring some new music that most people probably haven’t heard😉

  3. These themes are fun to think about. Nothing is coming to mind for me right now, but I have a feeling I will be thinking about this idea this morning in between chores!

    1. Maybe you can fit next week’s “city, state, country, town, county” into a post with a song.
Music is tied to so many things in my life. Plus I randomly sing and dance… Casa Cuckoo: The Musical 😂😂😂💃🏼🎶

    1. Not everyone enjoys Metallica, and I know that. I’ve found that traditional instruments and singing almost always is enjoyable though, so I wanted to share The Hu. The throat singing is so cool, and feels … primal.
I was gonna go with Sound Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel vs Disturbed. Another “Metal” band, but they do an Outstanding job with the song.

I went with The Hu because of the traditional elements. I thought it might have broader appeal🤷🏼‍♀️

We seem to think along similar lines often. I’ll go with “great minds” rather than “nuttier than a fruitcake”, although that might be accurate too😆😂😂

    1. Thanks! I liked your songs too. I didn’t see a way to leave a comment on your post. Addiction is very tough. My ex is an alcoholic and during our 20+ years together it was a battle he won for as long as 8 years at one point, but ultimately lost again. The damage became too great.
I agree with you that 2020 is going to echo into the future with mental health issues.

  4. I love being introduced to new music, er…music I’m not familiar with. Have loved Metallica for a long time. While I don’t always like remakes, these guys did an amazing job with Sad But True. I can see The Hu providing music for movies as well. They just have a sound and look that I think would translate well with the right movie. Very cool. I once read that one in every two hundred men are related to Genghis Khan. Wanna bet one of those guys is a descendent? This is the first time I’ve visited your site. I enjoyed it and will be back. Do you play music often? 🙂 Mona
