#SLS ~ Not A Wedding

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Check out all the rules, upcoming themes, and plenty of other great stuff at Jim’s site.

The theme this week is: Old, New, Borrowed, Blue.

I’ve been listening to a lot of music from the 90s recently, and the band Live was one of the great bands from the 90s. They are an American rock band formed in York, Pennsylvania in 1984, consisting of Ed Kowalczyk (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Chad Taylor (lead guitar, backing vocals), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass), and Chad Gracey (drums).

I’ve chosen their song Lightning Crashes from the 1994 album Throwing Copper, which sold eight million copies in the U.S.

The band had a grip of hits in the 90s including “Lightning Crashes”, which stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for ten consecutive weeks and the Modern Rock Tracks (now Alternative Songs) chart from February 25 to April 22, 1995.

There have been misinterpretations of this song, and especially the video’s meaning.

While the clip is shot in a home environment, I envisioned it taking place in a hospital, where all these simultaneous deaths and births are going on, one family mourning the loss of a woman while a screaming baby emerges from a young mother in another room. Nobody’s dying in the act of childbirth, as some viewers think. What you’re seeing is actually a happy ending based on a kind of transference of life.”

Ed Kowalczyk

New York magazine described the band as “deeply mystical” and claimed that the song was, “The story of a…connection between an old lady dying and a new mother at the moment of giving birth”

This song always pumps me up. I have to move or dance when I listen to it. It also frequently brings tears to my eyes. The video definitely makes me cry… not from sadness, but from overwhelming emotion.

Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes
The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door

Lightning crashes, an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes
The confusion that was hers
Belongs now, to the baby down the hall

Oh now feel it comin’ back again
Like a rollin’ thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin’ from the center of the earth again
I can feel it

Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
This moment she’s been waiting for
The angel opens her eyes
Pale blue colored iris, presents the circle
And puts the glory out to hide, hide

Oh now feel it comin’ back again
Like a rollin’ thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin’ from the center of the earth again
I can feel it
I can feel it

I can feel it comin’ back again
Like a rollin’ thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin’ from the center of the earth again
I can feel it

I can feel it comin’ back again
Like a rollin’ thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin’ from the center of the earth again
I can feel it

I can feel it comin’ back again
Like a rollin’ thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin’ from the center of the earth again
I can feel it
I can feel it
I can feel it

  1. Thanks for sharing this. One of my all time favorite songs!
I am listening to it right now as I type this comment ❤

      1. York is a dive-y city about 50 minutes from Gettysburg. It’s essentially the closest real city, like we’re in the york craigslist community. It’s where we need to go for more esoteric doctor appointments.

  2. I really liked this song when it came out but I never saw the video or knew what the song was really about. I’ll listen to it in a completely different way now that I know what it is about!

    1. I’m surprised you never saw the video. VH1 was still big in the 90s, even if MTV was starting to play less music🙄

This song just vibrates along my emotions.🤷🏼‍♀️ It did that before I knew the lyrics or story. Some music just does that to me.
I bet I look pretty funny when it comes on when I’m walking… my legs still walking, but my arms and head “dancing”🤣🤣🤣

  3. I am a fan of this song. Know all the words and immediately can’t help but sing along. I didn’t know Live sang it. I always thought is was Black Crowes. Now that I know, I will look for more of their stuff.

    Glad u are having fun.

A little tense around here today.
The boys are coming over to discuss the trust that their grandma left to Ken.

Ken thinks I’m on the kids side. Well, i just want to keep the peace.

The money was left to Ken and he has always promised it to our kids. Soo generous, right?
But there is conflict around how to disperse, etc.

    Will keep u posted

      1. Luckily, it all worked out. If you can’t trust your family, who can you trust?
Lots of emotions going on when you lose your mother.
Andrew really is the sweetest and is the most level headed. He always brings us down to “loving eachother” and “family”

He is a blessing for sure.

Curtis is interested in crypto currency cause he sees his peers investing there and making money.

Ken is super conservative and only wants money put in retirement savings.

In either case, i think they are happy. It’s money they hadn’t thought was coming to them.

We are grateful for what Ken’s Mom has left us and miss her greatly.

Sitting up with my chickens. They are sweet and happy to sit in my lap.

Hoping your summer so far is going well.

Do you have Ben in any programs, or will he be at home?

        Take care Angie

  5. I love 90’s music – and this song. You can really just feel it. I remember when it was closely associated with the OK bombing in ’95 – for awhile, it was played everywhere.
