#SLS ~ Homegrown

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. You can find all kinds of cool stuff on Jim’s site, not just the rules for SLS, and future prompts. He hosts other music and writing prompts, and he writes a grip of cool stuff. Cruise over and check it out.

The theme this week, in honor of Independence Day is – American music which is any song played by an American group.

I have chosen Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats singing S.O.B., written by Nathaniel Rateliff. It was the lead single from their self-titled debut album, released in 2015. The Night Sweats feature Joseph Pope III (bass), Mark Shusterman (keyboards), Patrick Meese (drums), Luke Mossman (guitar), Wesley Watkins (trumpet), and Andy Wild (saxophone).

The song gained exposure after they played it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, on August 5, 2015. It reached number one in the U.S. on Billboard’s Adult Alternative list.

Wiki tells us Rateliff has said the song is, at heart, a troubled song about drinking one’s life away after a break-up, and explained that the lyrics are based on his personal experience with delirium tremens during alcohol withdrawal. He also described it as a “joke song” and said that originally his band didn’t plan to record it, but due to positive reception, did so and released it as a single.

I first heard the song on a local, independent radio station. They played it a lot as an intro to their morning show, and also just randomly since it was so popular. I love that the video is an homage to the ending of The Blues Brothers.

I’m gonna need someone to help me
I’m gonna need somebody’s hand
I’m gonna need someone to hold me down
I’m gonna need someone to care
I’m gonna writhe and shake my body
I’ll start pulling out my hair
I’m going to cover myself with
The ashes of you and nobody’s gonna give a damn

Son of a bitch
Give me a drink
One more night
This can’t be me
Son of a bitch
If I can’t get clean
I’m gonna drink my life away

Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

Now for seventeen years I’ve been throwing them back
Seventeen more will bury me
Can somebody please just tie me down
Or somebody give me a goddamn drink

Son of a bitch
Give me a drink
One more night
This can’t be me
Son of a bitch
If I can’t get clean
I’m gonna drink my life away

Mhm, mhm
Mhm, mhm, mhm, mhm
Mhm, mhm
Mhm, mhm, mhm, mhm

My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me
My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me
My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me
My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me

Son of a bitch
Give me a drink
One more night
This can’t be me
Son of a bitch
If I can’t get clean
I’m gonna drink my life away

Son of a bitch
Give me a drink
Son of a bitch
This can’t be me
Son of a bitch
If I can’t get clean
I’m gonna drink my life away

Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

.

So, what do you think? With so many American bands to choose from, what song would you choose? Thanks for stopping by.

.

Hugs!

  1. I really like this song. I’m envious that you have independent stations, ours are crap like iHeartRadio that play the same pop songs over and over. Even when they kick in an oldie it’s always Hungry like a wolf or Don’t stop believing. The only new band I’ve been attracted too since I moved to Gettysburg 15 years ago is Old Crow Medicine Show because I heard it on the now defunct Gettysburg College radio station.

    1. 91X is the only independent station we have as far as I know. They still play a lot of the popular rock & alternative but the have a local music show, and they do deep dives on old stuff too.

They were the first station to embrace “New Wave” back in 83. X-Fest, where I saw Tom Petty, et al was the 1st of yearly festival shows they do.

All the other stations are iheartradio owned. 🤷🏼‍♀️ we’re all being programmed by algorithms☹

    1. I sampled some of his other stuff, but need to actually listen to it.
I was surprised to read that he turned down a record deal at one point. I guess he was THE music in Denver for a while. 🎶💃🏼
Denver isn’t normally considered a music Hotspot 😂😂

    1. Wow! And here I thought I was playing something most people hadn’t heard.
I guess being on The Tonight Show helps get the word out, eh? They did SNL too.

There’s another American band that was huge in UK before they ever got noticed here… Kings Of Leon. I was gonna use one of their songs, but S.O.B. came on the radio, and that was it🤷🏼‍♀️🎶💃🏼

  2. Hey there Angie.
    How’s your summer going?
Things are good here. Lots of work gardening and caring for the chickens, My sister asked me to go away with her for a few days, but I’m fine staying home.

Made a cinnamon, raisin, walnut bread yesterday and made toasted cheese sandwiches with it. So good. Also baked an apricot crostada. Served it with ice cream for friends who stopped by yesterday.

Kids are the same. No changes.

    Just thought I’d say hi

    1. Sounds like you’re doing well. Happy with your chickens and garden… friends coming over, baking, cooking, getting your life back. That’s so awesome, Teri!🥰🥳
We’re all doing well. Ben has Summer School until mid August, then he’s off for 3 weeks, then back to school. 3 weeks will be nothing compared to 2020😉😂

We gotta let our “kids” live their lives. It’s difficult sometimes, but they need to figure it out for themselves.

      Big Hugs to you!!💌💌💌💌

      1. Hi Angie-
It’s nice to hear Ben will have a program over the summer.
I’m guessing he is still doing his chalk art.
Both of my kids stopped by for dinner last night. It’s nice to see them.
Curtis is looking for another job cause he’s not loving his current one.
Andrew has been house/dog sitting to make money. He met more of the girlfriends family last weekend and that went well.
Happy that you are listening to your music and responding to word press blogs.
I haven’t written in a bit. I miss it, and will get back to it soon.
Windy and much cooler this last couple of weeks here. Not typical for July weather, but I like it.
        Take care friend.
        Teri
