#SLS ~ Something Free?

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Future prompts or themes, all the rules, and many other very cool things can be found at Jim’s site. Head on over and look around.

This week the theme is – Alluring, Beautiful, Charming, Graceful, Seductive

I had three songs come to mind immediately. One I disregarded right away, figuring someone else would definitely choose it. Then I was left with two very different songs. I finally just went with the one I thought of first. I am aware there is controversy surrounding, and accusations against this artist. The song belongs to his band, with him as co-songwriter.

Quoting directly from Lyrics.com “The Beautiful People” is a song by American rock band Marilyn Manson. It was released as the lead single from the band’s second studio album, Antichrist Superstar in September 1996. Classified as alternative metal, the song was written by frontman Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez, and was produced by Trent Reznor, Dave Ogilvie and Manson.

The title of the song comes from Marilyn Bender’s 1967 book The Beautiful People, which exposed the world of scandal within the “jet-set” lifestyle of the 1960s, and the culture of beauty as it pertained to fashion and politics. In the context of the album’s concept, the song refers to the privileged class of elites whom the titular character, a populist demagogue called Antichrist Superstar, fulminate against. Lyrically, it discusses what Manson refers to as “the culture of beauty”.

The single peaked at number 26 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and remains known as one of Marilyn Manson’s most famous and most successful original songs…”

(WARNING -the video is kinda intense)

And I don’t want you and I don’t need you
Don’t bother to resist, or I’ll beat you
It’s not your fault that you’re always wrong
The weak ones are there to justify the strong
The beautiful people, the beautiful people
It’s all relative to the size of your steeple
You can’t see the forest for the trees
You can’t smell your own shit on your knees

There’s no time to discriminate
Hate every motherfucker
That’s in your way

Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it’s hard to be clean

The worms will live in every host
It’s hard to pick which one they eat the most
The horrible people, the horrible people
It’s as anatomic as the size of your steeple
Capitalism has made it this way
Old-fashioned fascism will take it away

Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it’s hard to be clean

There’s no time to discriminate
Hate every motherfucker
That’s in your way

The beautiful people
The beautiful people (ah)
The beautiful people
The beautiful people (ah)
The beautiful people
The beautiful people (ah)
The beautiful people
The beautiful people (ah)

Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it’s hard to be clean

Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful or something free?
Hey, you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it’s hard to be clean

The beautiful people
The beautiful people
The beautiful people
The beautiful people
The beautiful people
The beautiful people
The beautiful people
The beautiful people

I’ll be curious to see if my other two songs get chosen. What about you? What song would you chose for this week’s prompt? Are you a fan of Marilyn Manson’s music? Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I remember this song! ๐ŸŽถ Neat perspective on the prompt. Itโ€™s cool to think outside the box. Didnโ€™t he do a cover of โ€˜Tainted Loveโ€™? If itโ€™s what Iโ€™m thinking of, I really liked it. Have a super Sunday ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’•

    1. You’re right, he did do Taintec Love

I hadn’t heard that one, only his remake of the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams So thank you!!๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ

Thank you! I love that we’re trying to work on making ALL kinds of “beauty” appreciated, but there’s a long way to go still. I love that line from this song “… what do you see? Something beautiful or something free?” Personally I’d rather see and BE free๐Ÿ˜‰

I hope your Sunday is full of Magic and chill๐Ÿคž๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿค™โœจ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’•๐ŸŒˆ

  2. Angie I was surprised that I actually enjoyed the Marilyn Manson, as I usually dismiss his music as being nothing but noise. This is only the second Marilyn Manson video that I ever watched and perhaps I should have given him more of a chance. Again very original music.

    1. He’s a character for sure, and some of his music IS just noise to me also. They’ve done some remakes that are pretty good… the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams”, and Soft Cell “Tainted Love”

I’m glad you enjoyed the song!๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ

  3. I surprised myself with Marilyn Manson. I always thought I could separate the artist from the person but with him, I can’t. I never really got into his music – I think this is the only song of his that I actually know. I heard it recently and turned it off because of what is going on in his personal life. The same with Don McLean. I can’t listen to American Pie anymore knowing the physical damage he did to his wife. I can’t watch Annie Hall or any Woody Allen movies knowing what he did to his daughter. It was a self-awareness thing, really. I always thought I could separate but I guess I can’t.

    1. I was a little worried about that, but as I wrote, he’s not the sole songwriter and the band is as big a part of of the music… yadda yadda yadda.
Daughter still has issue with Johnny Depp for the same reason, and he’s Ben’s all time favorite. Maybe I’m just odd, because I don’t seem to have a problem separating the person from the work… especially if there are other people involved in the work.

      Here’s my #2 choice… just for you๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’•

    1. Younger was a HUGE fan. She & a friend road-tripped from San Diego to Phoenix to see him in a small venue when they were 18, so almost 9 years ago.
He’s very theatrical and I don’t love all of his music, but there’s some good stuff. He covered Personal Jesus too, which is good.

    1. Marilyn Manson isn’t a “favorite” of mine either. I do like this song and a few others๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ
