Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. What kind of random stuff should I write about? Ben running into the backyard completely naked after his bath cuz he wanted to look at the Full Moon? Zeus barking at thunder? Me spending most of one morning with a smudge of chocolate on my face and Daughter not telling me? Or should I just direct you to Jim’s site for future prompts? There’s one I suggested coming up soon.
The prompt words this week are – Other, That, This β Fandango Sunday
It took me a while to decide how I wanted to use this week’s prompt. Did I want to just use one or more of the words and choose a song, like Bohemian Rhapsody? Or did I want to take the idea of “This, That, and the Other” and find a song to fit the idea?
I went with the idea… a bunch of random things. There were a few songs that came to mind, but I chose We Didn’t Start The Fire, written and performed by Billy Joel.
This song is from his 1989 album Stormfront. It was his third US #1 hit. His previous two were It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me (1980 – Glass Houses) and Tell Her About It (1983 – An Innocent Man).
In the liner notes of Piano Man: The Very Best of Billy Joel, Joel explains that he wrote the song after a conversation with John Lennon’s son Sean. “I started with Harry Truman because in 1949, the year I was born, Harry Truman was president,” said Joel. “From there it kind of wrote itself.”
Joel told biographer Fred Schruers: “What does the song really mean? Is it an apologia for the baby boomers? No, it’s not. It’s just a song that says the world’s a mess. It’s always been a mess, it’s always going to be a mess.”
I have to agree with Billy. Looking back to 1989, there have been a lot of things we could add… both bad and good. A bit of this and that… and also some of the other. We all try to “fight the fire” in our own ways, try to make things a little better. We are a diverse nation so the concept of better will vary by person. We’re often fighting at cross purposes. The “fire” will go on… and on and on and on… Humans apparently are not all that intelligent.

What do you think? Did I get the prompt right or should I stop with the loose interpretations and stick to the actual words? What song would you choose?
(We had a better week but sleep, or the lack of sleep, continues to be a major issue. Ben got me up at 1:15am one night, and 4 something am two nights later. I continue to lurk and hope. I will return but I have no idea when. I miss being part of your Bloggy Life… I miss you.)

Nice concept interpreting the theme Angie. Every time i listen to this song, it makes me think that Billy Joel might have Tourette syndrome, just shouting out this, that and the other. Great song and you really burned up Song Lyric Sunday with this one.

I don’t know about TS but he had just turned 40, so maybe it was a midlife crisisπ

The best! This song is both sing-along and get up outta your chair to dance!! I heard Billy was considering adding some verses to take us past 1989. Not sure if I am misremembering. Seems cool to do that though.

I didn’t see anything in my reading that he was seriously considering it. There have been some spin-off songs … and of course I can’t remember exactly where I read about them. π€ͺ My memory is so horrible these days!
What were we talking about? Who are you? π€£π€£π€£ππ

Love this song! When I ran in high school this would be the song I had in my head to pace myself. Such a great beat!

Billy Joel has said he doesn’t like the music of this song, that it’s like a mosquito droneπ It does have a nice rhythmic beat though. I can imagine it would be good running song.ππ»π

No. You nailed it. My kids like that song so I hear it once in a while. I had no idea what he was talking about. I ran outside naked for the full moon also⦠figuratively.

No literal naked moon bathing? Are you sure????ππ We hearing impaired folks learn so much from reading lyrics! Or we get more confused in some casesπ

Pps. That song reminds me if these two little kids I saw in a talent show who chanted the entire history of the world with a accompanying hand movements. They started with Adam & Eve and went straight through to Jerry Falwell.

Whoa! That sounds kinda cool actually. Except for Jerry Falwellπ

Hawklad loves this song. I was supposed to see Billy with Elton John. On the way to the concert when we found out the concert was off due to illness. That was it. Bet it would have been amazing β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ

Wow! Yeah, that would’ve been fantastic! Dueling pianos.
I hate when shows get canceled. In the early 90s we had tickets for Rod Stewart and it was canceled 3 times before he finally playedπ
Hawklad has great taste in music! I seem to remember there was one band that was questionable though… can’t remember who.

Yikes! 1AM and 4AM? That’s rough.
We had news that the girl that Curtis likes has an ex husband who is abusive. He pretended to be the girl who Curtis likes and kept texting him as if he was the girl. Curtis had invited her over to his place, but the drama unfolded and she didn’t feel comfortable going over. He was bummed. It was great that Curtis finally liked someone after all of these years. Who knows? Maybe it will work out in the end. He even cleaned his condo for her.
I baked focaccia bread, blackberry scones, pistachio biscotti
and made butternut squash gnocchi for dinner tonight. It’s raining here. I can’t believe it.
Here’s to you getting a good nights rest tonight. Have you tried cannabis gummies? I wonder if those would work. I made an apple cake w cannabis leaves and it puts me right to sleep.
Nighty night.

Poor Curtis. I hope he keeps trying. That girl sounds like she has too much baggage right now anyway… he’s better off.
You make the yummiest stuff. I usually just microwave a frozen Amy’s bowl.ππ I don’t like cooking or baking very much anymore. Plus, everyone is so picky, I’d be making things just for meπ€·πΌββοΈ I bought some yeast cuz bread sounds really good, so if I can muster the energy, I might make some bread.
Younger works at a dispensary, so I can get any cannabis products I want. I hade her get me some dark chocolate the other day. My sleep has been an issue for years… it’s part of the fibromyalgia. I take Restoril, prescribed by my doctor, but life interferes or fibromyalgia interferesπ€·πΌββοΈ I got 7 hours the other night. I was shocked and excited. ππ
