#SLS ~ Oh, Oh, Oh

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Random stuff… This past week has been another rough one. I finally went to the eye doc for new glasses since mine were more tape than frame, plus I needed a stronger prescription. As I was leaving, I bent down to grab my purse and my glasses fell off, and broke in half. I used more tape so I could drive home. They are toast though… completely unusable. I found a pair of old, but still sealed contact lenses and have been using those, waiting for my new glasses.

Then the next day was my pump fill. I wasn’t seen until 1:40pm for a 1:00pm appointment and it took forever for the doctor to do the fill. Apparently their office, and the surgical center downstairs, were raided by the DEA last month. They didn’t find any violations, just caused a bunch of havoc and tighter restrictions. Add the wonky weather that goes from highs in the low 60s one day, then low 90s two days later… OY! Casa Cuckoo, and my life are still a roller-coaster ride and it just hasn’t stopped! How have you guys been?

The prompt words for this week – Communication, Information, News, Telephone

As usual, I had several songs immediately jump into my head. The first obvious one was Communication Breakdown by my favorite band of all time, and Tom Petty’s I Need To Know, plus a couple more. Ultimately I chose Straight Up performed by Paula Abdul cuz it’s such a fun, catchy song.

Songfacts tells us the Forever Your Girl album, released in 1988, did not hit #1 in the US until its 64th week on the chart, the longest ever journey to the top. It eventually became the best-selling single of 1989.

This song was the breakout hit for Paula Abdul, who before she was a singer, was a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers and a dancer. She had a knack for creating dance moves that went over well on MTV and became an in-demand choreographer after working with Janet Jackson on videos for “Nasty,” “When I Think of You,” and “What Have You Done For Me Lately.” She went on to work with ZZ Top, Duran Duran and Debbie Gibson before starting her own career as a singer.

This song was written and produced by Elliot Wolff… He wrote Straight Up for a new singer he was working with who was signed to Virgin Records, but she was dropped from the label before releasing any material. Wolff’s demo made its way to Abdul when she was looking for material for her first album. The demo was low quality, but Abdul loved the song and convinced her record company to let her record it, which she did in Wolff’s studio apartment. Abdul recalls using Wolff’s shower as a vocal booth, and the neighbors banging on the walls to complain.

Wolff also wrote Cold Hearted, for Abdul, which was also a #1 hit. He died in 2016 at age 60 when he went on a solo camping trip in New Mexico and never returned.

Lost in a dream
I don’t know which way to go.
(A-let me say it.)
If you are all that you seem
Then, baby, I’m movin’ way too slow.

I’ve been a fool before.
Wouldn’t like to get my love caught in the slammin’ door.
How about some information, please ?

Straight up!
Now tell me, do you really wanna love me forever
(Oh, oh, oh.)
Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
Straight up!
Now tell me, is it gonna be you and me together
(Oh, oh, oh.)
Or are you just having fun?

Time’s standing still.
Waiting for some small clue.
(A-let me tell ya now.)
I keep getting chills
When I think your love is true.

I’ve been a fool before.
Wouldn’t like to get my love caught in the slammin’ door.
How about some information, please?

Straight up!
Now tell me, do you really want to love me forever
(Oh, oh, oh.)
Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
Straight up!
Now tell me, is it gonna be you and me together
(Oh, oh, oh.)
Or are you just having fun?

You are so hard to read.
You play hide-and-seek
With your true intentions.
If you’re only playing games,
I’ll just have to say
A-bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye.

A-do-do you love me, do-do you love me, baby?
A-do-do you love me, do-do you love me?
A-hey, baby.
A-do-do you love me, do-do you love me, baby?
Come on now.
A-do-do you love me, do-do you love me?
A-tell me, baby.

I’ve been a fool before.
Wouldn’t like to get my love caught in the slammin’ door.
Are you more than hot for me
Or am I a page in your history book?

I don’t mean to make demands,
But the word and the deed go hand in hand.
How about some information, please?

Straight up. Now tell me (tell me)…
Straight up. Now tell me (tell me)…
Straight up. Now tell me (tell me)…
Straight up. Now tell me…
Straight up. Now tell me…

Straight up!
Now tell me, do you really want to love me forever
(Oh, oh, oh.)
Or am I caught in a hit-and-run?
Straight up!
Now tell me, is it gonna be you and me together
(Oh, oh, oh.)
Or are you just having fun?

Whew! That’s a lot of lyrics! What song comes to mind for you? Did you know Paula Abdul was a singer, choreographer and Lakers cheerleader before she was an American Idol judge? Thanks for stopping by!

HUGS!!

    1. Thanks Sadje💕 I keep thinking things will calm down, but nope! We have a leak in a pipe by the hot water heater now🤦🏼‍♀️ luckily it’s outside the house and we still have hot water, but the owner needs to send a plumber. This fix is a little beyond what I want to do😉
Daughter starts working in her new section on Thursday, with a regular schedule, so hopefully that will help things get a little more … regular? Not “normal”, things are never normal here🤣

      1. Fixing things in a rented space is such a bother. We did a lot of it when we moved in this house. The owner was hard to get hold of, living in Canada and we thought that it would make life easier if we did it ourselves.
I hope things settle down for you all. Is Ben still going to school in person?

        1. Ben is still getting on that GLYSB 5 days a week (unless there’s a holiday)🥳💃🏼 He complains, but I know he enjoys getting out of the house and interacting with his peers.

I usually take care of repairs too. I hate waiting for someone to come. It’s noon Monday as I type this, and I got a voice-mail Saturday night that they had contacted the plumber, but I haven’t heard anything else🤷🏼‍♀️ At least the owner can’t get angry about the water bill. I’m sure it’s going to be higher. We split it cuz 2 houses on one water line, no way to Guage who uses what.
I’ve always lived in rentals. SoCal is beyond my means, especially since I’ve been disabled since my early 30s. A decent house here would cost at least $750,000… at least! And investors have bought up huge amounts for Air B &Bs… we don’t have enough housing… especially affordable housing. It’s a mess.

I hope you guys have everything fixed and are all settled in🤞 💕🤗🥰

          1. That’s great that Ben is going to school in person as it helps the kids not only to learn better but also take away the feelings of isolation and loneliness.
I hope the owner does get the pipes fixed. Wastage of water really is sad.
We are all fixed up and functional. Finally. Thanks

  1. Didn’t know that, but I do now.
How are you? I have been offline for a number of months as I have an unsupported browser and a mind that cannot translate that into anything recognisable. I’m doing this on my phone.

I do hope that you are in good health and that you have replacement glasses.

It’s Sunday morning and pretty miserable. Late October showers are washing the streets.

    New book finished:

I think you may like it.

    1. Cool! I bought it. Hopefully things will settle down and I can actually start reading again. I haven’t read a book since 2019😲 I either fall asleep, which I do randomly when I stop moving, or my mind wanders.

We’re all healthy and trying to get through each day. How are you and the Missus and your girls? All well I hope🤞 I miss chatting with you.

  2. I know a bit about Paula Abdul’s career, but I think this is the first time that I ever heard her sing and I am probably the only person on Earth that has never watched American Idol. Nice music Angie and I hope the new glasses work out for you.

    1. Thanks Jim! I only watched Idol for the first 2 or 3 seasons. The glasses… UGH! I couldn’t believe they broke at the optometrist. I’m lucky I had those contact lenses. They were “expired” but still sealed and not dried out🤷🏼‍♀️ I was willing to try. I can’t imagine trying to make the glasses work… I’d probably explode with frustration.

Oh, and I’m glad you liked the song too😂

    1. I went back and listened to all her songs from that album, and watched the videos. So much fun!

Thanks about the glasses. I only do this post for now, and I try to combine a catch up for my regular readers with the prompt. Hmmmm… giving information… 😂 I guess it fits this week.

  3. I love her backstory especially the unusual recording part! I didn’t know she was a cheerleader. Paula Abdul has so much spunk and pizzazz. This is a super take on the prompt! Led Zeppelin would have been a good choice too ☺️.
I had no idea the DEA would raid a doctor’s office like that. I bet it makes doing what they do a lot harder!
    Huge Hugs 🤗☀️🌙⭐️

    1. Thanks. Yeah, with them doing the pump fills, and other shots there, they keep some medications in the office. And until the raid, a pharmacist came in to mix to powder meds with liquid so they could be injected into the pumps. Now they have to order the meds and it takes longer and they can only hold them for 3 days then they have to toss them… not that there’s anything wrong after 3 days, just stupid rules🤦🏼‍♀️ It makes things harder for everyone. It’s why doctors are getting out of “pain” or refusing to prescribe opiates.🤪

  5. Died at 60 on a solo camping trip. Strikes me as one possible future. I think I get Paula Abdul and Gloria Estefan confused. Which one broke her back? At my first job, the guy in the office next to me, Henry, was known around work for two things. Solo camping trips and writing long letters to either Gloria Estefan or Paula Abdul (the one who broke her back). Henry honestly thought he was going to connect with a nationally know singer because he wrote her sweet letters. I can’t listen to your song because my hearing aids won’t connect to my computer and I was at a bike race in the freezing cold for 8 hours today and I’m bundled up and I’m not going to go look for headphones. Is Paula Abdul the judge on American Idol who got drunk all the time?

    1. Estefan broke her back, was someone drunk all the time?? I only watched the first 2 or 3 seasons and she was the gal between Simon & Randy🤷🏼‍♀️
Dang… freezing cold for 8 hours??? Real Autumn?? Cue Keanu… “Whoa!”

You’re not really missing anything musically, but it IS a catchy dance song.

      1. I don’t really like catchy dance songs anyway. Yes, today was the first day I experienced autumn weather this year. Forties, windy, gloomy skies. Away from home for 12 hours. Today was the end of the season for Eli, just like last year, I’m ready for a break.

  6. This is a fun catchy dance song. Good choice! I thought of Communication Breakdown as well. I’m sorry about your glasses and hope the new ones get to you soon. Paula Abdul was also a judge for a bit on So You Think You Can Dance. I think she was on some kind of medicine because her speech was always slurred. She had to talk really slow to get her point across. I just googled it – she was drunk on American Idol. There’s a whole compilation of her drunk. On So You Think You Can Dance she just talked slurred and slow – eh – who knows.

    1. Thanks for the research! I don’t remember her acting drunk, but the first seasons were a Loooonnng time ago. Like 20 years, I think🤔
I might’ve had to be drunk to sit next to Simon and listen to all the auditions of deluded people who really couldn’t sing. 😂😂

How are things going for your crew? Are you guys finding a routine yet? We’re still working on it🤪🤦🏼‍♀️ Daughter starts her new job in Surgical ICU on Thursday with a regular, set schedule again, so that should help.
Are you guys ready for Halloween?? Ben will be old school grey & blue Batman. He said Daughter has to be Batgirl, and I have to be Robin. We ordered the costumes and they came, but I haven’t even looked at mine yet😂 I have to do some sewing on Ben’s cuz he’s had it for a while, and wears it every weekend🤦🏼‍♀️ sound familiar???😂

      1. Hahaha! That does sound familiar! Good luck!

Well, today is the first day Bob is going back to the office. But of course, Bobby is staying home because he is not feeling well. I learned with Declan – don’t even send them in with the slightest ailment because then you have to prove their illness is not related to Covid at all. You just can’t get a common cold anymore! I’m trying to regain some footing here. I feel like I am not doing anything I was doing pre Covid or during the initial quarantine. I don’t write, I don’t hold a book to read it, I quit my gym. I’m not going to lie – I am a little lost right now. BUT I am hopeful that when our routine hits a steady pace again, I will do the same. There is too much up and down with each day. With Bob back in the office and the kids in school I am hopeful to find a regular routine.

Declan made me a great big piece of pink felt with marker all over it – I am to wear it on my head and goes as “brains.” Bob’s birthday is this weekend and Declan bought him the Shorty costume from Killer Clowns. Declan HAS the entire Sam costume from Trick or Treat but also made a paper mache head of Kermit the Frog. He is still holding strong that Kermit is the way he wants to go. I don’t know, though. We still have two weeks and a lot can change in that time! 🙂

    1. You’d think it would calm down, wouldn’t you?😂😂 There have been… pauses. They sometimes last 2 or 3 days, then the madness resumes🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s been this way as long as I can remember. At least I’m never bored😉😂
I’ll look after myself if you’ll do the same😉

  7. Broken glasses is never fun, but at least they weren’t on your head when they broke 🙂 What was it you said about september being the bad month … ?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Seriously… It’s like September 51st or something today, right?😂 I got my new glasses today and I plan on buying at least one back up pair. Plus there’s always the contact lenses in an emergency.

Hopefully, since Ben is getting better at self-regulation he won’t be smacking the glasses off my face and breaking them anymore. The break at the optometrist was the 4th or 5th break. They deserve a Viking Funeral but they’re plastic🤷🏼‍♀️ maybe they can be recycled 🤔
