#SLS ~ Canned POTUS

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. No long, dull Casa Cuckoo update this week. Let’s just listen to the music!

The prompt this week – Songs that mention a Fruit

As usual, songs were popping into my head, but I decided to be very specific and use a song with the actual fruit, not the fruit used as a color like Raspberry Beret, or as a name like Tangerine. Those are two excellent songs, but didn’t fit my rule. After considering Coconut, I chose Peaches by The Presidents Of The United States Of America or POTUS.

Bassist and vocalist Chris Ballew told Songfacts that he heard a homeless man passing by him at bus stop muttering “Moving to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches.” over and over under his breath, and it stuck with him. He built the song from there.

Peaches is from POTUS self titled debut album released in 1995. The song was the third single, released in 1996 and it reached #8 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart. It was also nominated for a “Best Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals” Grammy in 1997 but lost to The Beatles Free As A Bird (I don’t remember the song from The Beatles, but I definitely remember Peaches)

Movin’ to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
I’m movin’ to the country,
I’m gonna eat me a lot of peaches
Movin’ to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin’ to the country,
I’m gonna eat a lot of peaches

Peaches come from a can,
They were put there by a man
In a factory downtown

If I had my little way,
I’d eat peaches every day
Sun-soakin’ bulges in the shade

I’m movin’ to the country,
I’m gonna eat me a lot of peaches
Movin’ to the country,
I’m gonna eat me a lot of peaches

Movin’ to the country,
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches
Movin’ to the country,
I’m gonna eat me a lot of peaches

I took a little nap where the roots all twist
Squished a rotten peach in my fist
And dreamed about you, woman,
I poked my finger down inside
Make a little room for an ant to hide
Nature’s candy in my hand or can or pie

Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free
Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free

Look out!

Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free
Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free

Look out!

What do you think? Fan or not so much? What song would you have chosen for this prompt? Thanks for stopping by.

  1. I’ve heard a different back story to the song. I read that it was a tribute to John Prine’s Spanish Pipe Dream (one of my faves). Although strangely, I never put those two songs together until Susan pointed it out to me. This doesn’t invalidate your back story. Probably, the guy singing the song was riffing on Spanish Pipe Dream because why else would he want to move to the country and eat a lot of peaches.
    — Blow up your TV
    — Throw away your paper
    — Go to the country
    — Build you a home
    — Plant a little garden
    — Eat a lot of peaches
    — Try an’ find Jesus on your own

    1. I had to look up the song. Maybe both are true… maybe the homeless guy got the lyrics from John Prine๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ
I just went by the interview I read. He also said he was trippin on LSD, so who knows๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  2. I liked your music Angie, but the ninja video was a bit weird. The Beatles song Free As A Bird wasn’t all that good and it should have never gotten that high on the charts, but there are still a lot of The Beatles fans around.

  3. Cool song, completely new to me. I can see how that moment and the mumblings would sort of stick with a person ๐Ÿ˜„

Hereโ€™s the one that jumped straight into my noggin when I read the word โ€˜fruitโ€™. Thanks for some fun and hope you have a Peachy Day! ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿงก๐ŸŽถ

    1. Oh! I didn’t know Harry did a coconut song๐Ÿ˜ฒ I would’ve totally used that, especially since he recently celebrated his 95th Birthday ๐Ÿฅณ I didn’t wanna use the banana song cuz I thought someone else might.๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

  4. What a great song. This is definitely one of those songs that has a tendency to plant an earworm. Their other one, Lump is also a song that just nestles into your brain and keeps you humming for hours!

  5. HI Angie I’ve been having trouble replying from my cell phone. Weird WordPress stuff about logging in, etc.
Just wanted to update you on Andrew. He loves his job at the robotic company. They are starting to give him around 36 hrs a week. He stopped by to drop off his laundry today. He is happy and doing well.
Hope you are getting more sleep.
I’ve been planting tomato and pepper seeds.

    Just wanted to say hello.

    1. WOW!!! Great news about Andrew! Thank you for telling me.

You can always email me thru my contact page or my secondary email AngieOfMurphy at Gmail. I can’t leave my primary here because it’s my full name and while I don’t care, I have Ben’s privacy to protect.

Congrats to Andrew ๐Ÿฅณ and you are way more patient than me. I always bought Peppers & Tomatoes as seedlings. Those seeds are too dang small๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

        1. It was cuz Roman Coppola, son of Francis Ford had been watching ninja movies and wanted to make one. I’m sure the band was thrilled to have a Coppola direct their video, not knowing they’d be doing ninja stuff. But they also had a song called Lump which is weird, so who knows๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
