The prompt words this week – Beach, Surf, Swimming
After thinking about, and rejecting, Santa Monica and Electric Feel, I settled on Oceans by Pearl Jam, even though it doesn’t contain those three words. I think I’m okay though cuz it has “shore, waves, sea and oceans”.
Oceans is from Pearl Jam’s 1991 debut album, Ten. The music was written by bass player Jeff Ament, guitar player Stone Gossard, and singer Eddie Vedder. Vedder wrote the lyrics when he got locked out of the studio after feeding a parking meter. He heard the bass coming through a boarded up window and grabbed a pen and scrap of paper from his pocket and just started writing. Whenever the guys would take a break, he’d pound on the door to be let back in.
Oceans was released as a single in December of 1992, but after Jeremy, Alive, and Even Flow it didn’t really go anywhere. Ten was certified 13Γ Platinum in February 2013, having sold thirteen million copies in the U.S.
Pearl Jam’s re-mixer, Tim Palmer, got credit for playing a fire extinguisher and a pepper mill on this song. In December 1992, he told Guitar World “I used the pepper mill as a shaker and used drum sticks on the extinguisher as a sort of bell effect. At about 30 seconds into the song you can hear the pepper shaker on the left and the fire extinguisher on the right…” I guess they didn’t have any cow bells.
The video was shot while the band was on tour in Hawaii.
Hold on to the thread
The currents will shift
Glide me towards you
Know something’s left
And we’re all allowed
To dream of the next
Of the next time we touch
You don’t have to stray
Though oceans away
Waves roll in my thoughts
Hold tight the ring
The sea will rise
Please stand by the shore
I will be
I will be there once more
.
Are you a Pearl Jam fan? How about a fan of the ocean, or have you ever surfed, or boogie boarded? What song would you choose for this prompt? Thanks for stopping by!

I’ve never really been a fan of Pearl Jam, although that might be from lack of exposure. I liked Citizen Dick in the movie Singles. A friend pointed out that they are, in essence, Pearl Jam. This song is nice though. I suppose I should probably try to learn more about the band.

I think you would like them. They have really rockin’ songs, and very beautiful mellow songs. Sometimes Eddie Vedder’s lyrics don’t make a lot of sense, but I guess that leaves them open to interpretation.
Vedder himself is very soft-spoken and humble… from what I’ve seenπ I don’t know himπππ

Nice selection Angie. Pearl Jam always has this haunting sound in their harmonies, and I think that is what I like best about them.

Eddie Vedder can really make you FEEL when he sings, which is good cuz it’s hard to understand what he’s Saying half the timeππ

Not just you. They don’t put their lyrics out right away either. I read that Eddie sometimes leaves words out on purpose when he does release lyrics. He wants people to connect with it in their own way. He likes to make up meanings too. Telling different interviewers different stories.π€·πΌββοΈ

I noticed you weren’t muddling your April musicπ I saw Sink To The Bottom by Fountains Of Wayne and thought that would’ve been a good one for you. I never paid attention to them until you used them.πΆ
Lots of great beach stuff… All the Jimmy Buffet, Jack Johnson, Beach Boys and Boys Of Summer, obviously the DH version π

I like sitting by the ocean admiring the view, rather than getting in it. It’s chilly here! ππ

I don’t go into the waves as often as I did when I was younger, but I like to walk along where the waves break. I haven’t been to the beach since 2019… I need to make time to go.

Yes, I think there’s something refreshing about being by the sea – it calms the mind. π

Oh yeah, I’d love to see them too, but it’s Hella expensive and they sell out fast. Eddie Vedder was in my city doing a solo project show… I looked up tickets… all they had left was seats at $1000.00 eachπ²
Ummmm…. nope! He’s good, but for a $1000, I can think of better things to do.
Not that I have a spare grand lying aroundπ€ͺππ

Great song choice! Ten was my favorite album by them by far. I was so into that album and was so excited for their next album that I was at the music store the day it came out. I just couldn’t get into it though. And I never purchased one of their albums again. But I can listen to Ten anytime, all the time. Love it!
