#SLS ~ Grammy For #2

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Things at the Casa have been Bonkers! No one is sleeping well, except Sven who is still in his house, being a lump that occasionally glares. I had the follow-up appointment with my Primary Care Provider on Wednesday. He was running behind, which is unusual for him, and he didn’t know why I was there. The appointment ended up being very short cuz he decided he needed to review all the results from all the tests from the hospital, then he wanted me to get more blood tests, but he needed to think about which ones. His office called me Thursday to come pick up the lab slip and to tell me he wants me to add B12 to daily pills. I’ll go to the lab Monday or Tuesday and review the results with the doctor on Friday. Plus, I have my monthly Pump Fill on Wednesday. There’s a bunch of other stuff I need to take care of, but Murphy keeps throwing curveballs and wild pitches at me. Add all the National and World drama llama ding dong, and I’m ready to find a cave to hide in. Anyway, let’s get on with the reason for this post… the Music!

The prompt words this week – Hidden Gems: great songs that missed the top of the charts

I wasn’t sure how to approach this prompt. I finally decided to look up the best #2 songs, and Goigle spit out a site with a great list. I narrowed it down to two songs, one by Jewel, and the one I chose, Hurts So Good by John Mellencamp (who was still John Cougar at the time).

Hurts So Good is the first single released from his 1982 album American Fool (his 5th! album). He won a Grammy for this song, according to Songfacts. The video for the song got heavy play on MTV. The bikers and the “babes”, along with the lyrics helped the song appeal to the rural population, also per Sonfacts. Curious which song kept him from #1? It was Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor. An inferior, and annoying song IMO.

I chose this song because John Mellencamp is one of a few artists that are part of my Memory Soundtrack. He had so many hits in the 80s and into the 90s that it seems like one of his songs was always playing. My ex was a big fan too, so cassettes, replaced by CDs were often playing too. Also, the ex’s family all live in Indiana, which is where Mellencamp is from, so there was that association.

When I was a young boy
Said put away those young boy ways
Now that I’m gettin’ older
So much older
I long for those young boy days
With a girl like you
With a girl like you
Lord knows there are things we can do, baby
Just me and you
Come on and make it hurt

Hurt so good
Come on baby, make it hurt so good
Sometimes love don’t feel like it should
You make it hurt so good

Don’t have to be so exciting
Just tryin’ to give myself
A little bit of fun, yeah
You always look so invitin’
You ain’t as green as you are young
Hey baby, its you
Come on, girl, now, its you
Sink your teeth right through my bones, baby
Let’s see what we can do
Come on and make it hurt

Hurt so good
Come on baby, make it hurt so good
Sometimes love don’t feel like it should
You make it hurt so good

I ain’t talkin’ no big deals
I ain’t made no plans myself
I ain’t talkin’ no high heels
Maybe we could walk around
All day long
Walk around
All day long

Hurt so good
Come on baby, make it hurt so good
Sometimes love don’t feel like it should
You make it hurt so good

Hurt so good
Come on baby, now
Come on baby, make it hurt so good
Sometimes love don’t feel like it should
You make it hurt so good

Hey, hey

  1. Great choice John has a great voice the guitar breaks remind of of another group it will come to me not sure if it’s a stone’s track?
Sorry to hear your doctor was so incompetent, especially as you have to pay. Do they adjust the fee when they mess up and cut things short….I bet not.
As for the state of the US. God bless you all and pray Gilead is not coming your way. As for the rest of the world God help us too πŸ’œπŸ’œ
Oh! I just remembered it’s not the stones it’s Micheal Jackson listen to the guitar rift classic on both tracks!

    1. I like both songs, but I think I’m not objective enough to hear similarities πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚ MJ is MJ and Mellencamp is Mellencamp in my mindπŸ˜‚

I’m not sure what, if anything I’ll owe the doctor for the visit. I have Medicare coverage, which is Federal Health Insurance for retired and disabled people. It’s not great coverage but it’s better than nothing.

The US is certainly a mess! I hope this latest episode will motivate people to VOTE! So many people just sit it out because all the choices are bad. As we’ve seen though, there are differences we can make and if you choose to sit it out, you’re allowing others to choose for you.

The US has GOT to be the laughingstock of the entire World. Who would take us seriously after all this stuff? It irritates me cuz it’s NOT the way most people are. The extremes of BOTH sides do NOT reflect most people.
I just hope it doesn’t get more broken before we can start to fix things, but I fear it will.

      1. I know what you mean it’s just the similarity on the guitar breaks. Fingers crossed you have no drs bill . I am really hoping America can sort itself out very soon πŸ’œπŸ™‚πŸ™‚

  2. Great selection Angie. This song seems like an oxymoron having two opposing things that are both true (being hurt and feeling good). The link between pleasure and pain is deeply rooted in our biology. Pain causes the central nervous system to release endorphins which block pain and work in a similar way to opiates such as morphine to induce feelings of euphoria.

  3. Eye of the tiger might be my least fav song… not because it is so awful, but because so many people think it’s great. It shows up in spin classes all the time, and you’re right, annoying. I’d be livid with my doctor if I showed up and she was unprepared. Did they charge you? I like John Cougar ok but I definitely get my fill from what my kids play. I would fail miserably at this theme because I doubt anything I like shows up on any chart topping list. And if they did, I’d never know.

    1. You might be surprised at some popular songs that didn’t do that great. Paula used Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”… it only got to #17 πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Bohemian Rhapsody was on that list of #2 songs.
Stuff like Macarena & Eye Of The Tiger kept some good songs from reaching the top.

I’m gonna give the doc a pass this time. He’d been on vacation, then he’d been sick. My appointment was rescheduled and I think he was double booked cuz he’s NEVER 45 minutes behind. The hospital visit and the Big Mystery occurred while he was on vacation. I’m glad he took the time to review everything before just ordering random blood tests.

I don’t care if he bills Medicare for the appointment. I wasn’t asked to pay, but I may be billedπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ He’s pretty good about staying within what Medicare covers.

    1. Totally agree with you about Eye of the Tiger… and Hurts So Good! No surprise there. We have similar tastes… GOODπŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Those old videos are funny though! So amateur compared to now, but fantastic music!!

  4. Stop Drsggin My Heart Around with Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty never got to number one either. I sure do like your pick though. A favorite of mine. Extra hugs for these extra weird times! πŸ€—πŸŽΆ

  5. Great choice! I would do so bad at this theme only because I don’t know which songs hit the top of the charts and which ones didn’t. I thought this one did because it is so memorable (and one I always sing in jest when working out). Good catch to know that it didn’t! I hope the next Dr.’s appt goes well and they can find out what is going on to help you!

    1. I didn’t know either, that’s why I looked up #2 songsπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ A lot of the #1 songs listed that beat out the #2s are songs I’ve never heard ofπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ But I don’t generally follow “pop” music.
I hope the newest blood tests help too! I got a call today from the hematologist office, they want me to come in for a follow-up πŸ™„ I figure he just wants some Medicare moneyπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ It won’t hurt to see him… especially if my Primary can’t figure out what happened. I just hope it was my weird body being random🀞 I already have enough medical issues, I don’t need moreπŸ€ͺπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ€—πŸ₯°

  6. This is a great Mellencamp song. I must admit I find it hard to call a #2 song a hidden gem, I tend to think deep album cuts or commercial flops that become fan favorites at a later date. Hey Jim these may be two good topics for another week. Either way great song.

    1. Yeah, I wasn’t sure where to go with this prompt. A deep cut from an album would be good, and a lot of what I listen to doesn’t ever chart, or only charts on “alternative”, and that’s only the corporate pushed stuff. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Any excuse to play Mellencamp is a good oneπŸ˜‰

  7. I totally agree with you about the amount of world drama. I’ve decided to limit my social media time. I’m too upset about Jan 6th hearings, Roe vs Wade decision, Gun laws, gas prices, food shortages… The list goes on and on.
Andrew and Ken went to Yosemite last week for 4 days. It was a nice break for me and I love having the house to myself. Of course the washer broke, the ground squirrels are eating all of the greens on my crops and making huge holes all over our property, and one of my chickens has been acting broody. It’s all new to me and I’m trying to go with the flow, but the other chickens will also stop laying and it can become a thing. Now she is being mean to the others and there are fights breaking out between them. I hate it.
Other than that, all is well. Well, Curtis is in Vegas and thinks he could have Covid again. Ugh. But I’m pretty sure he doesn’t take any precautions and wear masks while on the plane or at the card rooms.
Ken went to pick up a air soft gun to help keep the critters under control. They have been having multiple babies and it’s getting ridiculous around here. Luckily, the weather has cooled down some and there is a breeze which helps.
I’m glad your doctor is reviewing all the tests. Why couldn’t he have done that before your visit?
    Not cool.

    Get some sleep. Take care.

    1. I saw my Primary Doctor on Friday, and all my blood tests are great. He even did a cancer screening which was negative. Everything is perfect, which is awesome… except we still don’t know why I needed two units of whole blood in the hospital πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ He says it HAD to have been a G.I. bleed, but I would know if there was blood in my poop. I have IBS, so I monitor my BMs (TMI, I know… health stuffπŸ™„) plus they did the colonoscopy at the hospital… I would think if I’d had a major bleed, there would’ve been some signπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

So it’s still a giant mystery what happened. I’m seeing a Hematologist on the 12th, just to see if he has any ideas. Other than that, and my chronic pain (which I had drama… the pain clinic couldn’t get the fentanyl for my pump… they reduced me to 1/3 of my usual dosage for a couple daysπŸ™„πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ So stupid that pain clinics can’t get the med cuz of the “War On Opiates” and DEA gestapo tactics, but I could probably find fentanyl on the streetπŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ)

So other than the fibromyalgia or CRPS as my pain doc prefers, I am perfectly healthyπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Oh, and I need a mammogram πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

I’m glad you got some alone time. I’m sorry your washer picked then to breakπŸ™„πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ They don’t make stuff to last anymore☹️
This year has been so Wonky! The past few years, really. It started about 6 months before lockdown it seems… and it gets better, then worse, then a little better, then a lot worse…
It’s exhausting! I won’t even go into all the drama today at the CasaπŸ€ͺ I think we’ve had more positive than negative, but it’s closeπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Big Hugs TeriπŸ€— Just keep doing your best to get thru each day, and try to have some fun along the wayπŸ₯°

      1. How are you feeling now?
Haven’t been keeping up on WordPress lately.
I’ve been in Tahoe and Napa this past week.
Andrew is still looking for work and Curtis is still miserable with his job. Chickens are great right now. Two weeks ago one stopped laying altogether and it scared me. The term is β€œbroody”, which shouldn’t be a big deal, but they can also be egg bound. No bueno. Lots of ground squirrels 🐿 eating my plants and vegetables. I have no idea how the farmers grow their crops. Luckily I don’t have to grow my own food, or I would starve.
Hope all is well at casa cuckoo and you are on your way to better health.
        Hugs

        1. My Primary says all my recent blood work is perfect. I lost 5 pounds which bothers me, but my doctor says I’m at a perfect weightπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Health-wise everything is good. We still have no idea what happened to cause all the problems, so we’re gonna monitor it over the next few months.

The Casa is as Cuckoo as ever. Ben’s sleep is a major issue with me getting less and less. He’s been making improvements in controlling his reactions to anger or frustration though, so that’s good. Nothing broken in a week nowπŸ₯³

My ex M-I-L passed recently. Younger flew back for the funeral. It’s today (Monday) and I worry that the family will get into a Jerry Springer style fight. The brothers are ALL Bonkers! Younger is staying with the most sane one… NOT their Dad, my exπŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ They’ll be flying back tomorrow (Tuesday).

I’m glad your chickens are doing well. You care for them like childrenπŸ₯° and I’m very happy to read that you’re traveling to such beautiful parts of our state!!πŸ₯³
Our adult children have got to find their own way. It’s rough to see them struggle, but they gotta do it themselves.

I haven’t been on WP much myself, so you haven’t missed anything from meπŸ˜‰

          Big Hugs!!

          1. Sorry about your mother in law. I’m glad your daughters are attending the service. You’ve taught them well.
Bummer about the sleep. I hope you can nap when he does if that is possible. I don’t function well without sleep.
Lost 5 Lbs? At least your doctor is monitoring you. Keep advocating for yourself, especially if you aren’t feeling well.
It’s good to take a break from these computers occasionally. The technology can be a bit much.
Hoping you get through these next few weeks sanely before school begins again. I remember how hard summers can be.
I’m happy Ben is getting better control of his impulsive behavior. We call that a β€œW” or a β€œwin” in our family.
            Take care of you.
