#SLS ~ All That Glitters Is Gold

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Usually I would use this space to relate all the Casa Cuckoo news, but I’m not going to do that this week. There’s too much, and I honestly don’t think anyone wants to read it. You’re here for the music, so let’s get on with it!

The prompt this week – Feature a song by a group or an artist that surprisingly never reached #1 on the charts

I chose Led Zeppelin, my all time favorite band. They never had a #1 hit, even though many people consider Stairway To Heaven the best song of all time. It always won the #1 spot on a local radio station’s “Best Song” list when they’d do holiday weekend countdowns.

The highest on the charts Led Zeppelin ever got was #4 in 1969 with Whole Lotta Love, from their second album Led Zeppelin II. Writing credits go to all four members of the band, but with Whole Lotta Love, they had to add Willie Dixon.

According to Wiki… “Parts of the song’s lyrics were adapted from Willie Dixon’s “You Need Love”, recorded by Muddy Waters in 1962; originally uncredited to Dixon, a lawsuit in 1985 was settled with a payment to Dixon and credit on subsequent releases.”

Stairway To Heaven had it’s own legal troubles. Page and Plant were the writers of this song but a band called Spirit claimed that they copied their song Taurus. It was tied up in court for many years, but was eventually decided in Led Zeppelin’s favor. Wiki has all the deets if you’re interested.

  3. A great song by one of the best bands ever. I saw them play live in early 1971, when Robert Plant introduced this as “here’s a song off our new album.” As a Brit it’s strange to see Led Zep singles being discussed, as the band refused to release any of their songs as singles here.

      1. That’s a shame. To be honest, whilst it was great to see them we came away feeling that the band hadn’t enjoyed it. It was one of a series of small warm up gigs they did as preparation for a world tour later that year. Just a crowd of 1200, at the University of Kent. At least I can say I saw them live!

  4. That list had a whole lotta suprises to me on it!! I am a fan of Led Zeppelin and I can’t believe they never had a #1. How did that happen??   5. We’ll I’m interested in the personal stuff. Hope things aren’t too bad. Led Zeppelin isn’t my favorite band and Stairway to Heaven just seems too much at times. But I love whole lotta love. Those British consumers know their stuff. I hear Zep way more now than at any other point in my life because they are high on Eli’s band list. Finding other songs I like pretty well.

    1. Eli has good taste! The Cuckoo stuff is just life… nothing major except my ex MIL dying, and Younger flying back for the service and the stress of that huge crazy family🤦🏼‍♀️
      I’m still super healthy with no explanations why I needed 2 units of blood🤷🏼‍♀️ And that’s the major highlights. There are daily dramas with Ben and his testosterone rages but that’s life with Ben🤪 normal Cuckoo stuff.
      I figure that everyone has their own dramas and I’m honestly not looking for sympathy so why take up space on a music prompt. I’m too tired and too lazy to do a proper “catch up” post😂 and I find it tedious to live, I’m sure it would be tedious to read it😂

      So where’s you song choice? I bet you know some great bands that did well but never got a #1

    1. Thank you, it’s just life stuff… nothing major and I was pure laziness on my part to combine SLS with a life catch up once a week😂😂
      My group of followers is small and loyal and they’re used to me going quiet at times.
      I’m not surprised that you’re a Zeppelin fan😉 We seem to have similar taste in music🥳💃🏼🎶

  10. I love Led Zeppelin – it was the first box set I ever owned. It’s unfortunate that Bob hates them, so I do not get to listen to them as much as I would like. I can’t believe they never had a number one hit!! I just thought for sure a lot of their songs hit the top of the charts. Wow! Learned something new today! I hope all is well – thinking of you!

    1. I’ve been thinking of you also. It’s been more Cuckoo than usual. Ben isn’t sleeping and the testosterone rages aren’t great. Lots of broken things☹️ My ex’s mother passed and Younger flew back to Indiana for the service. Seeing the entire crazy family, including their father🙄… there was stress. How are you doing? Are you ready to run away from home yet?😂

      I think Zeppelin songs were too long, and too heavy for regular radio at the time😉 Why does Bob not like them? I’m always curious why people don’t like things😂😂

      1. When Bob was 16ish he worked at a convenience store. After work one day he went home with one of the adults that worked there to smoke weed. The guy had a huge Led Zeppelin poster that illuminated with a black light – do you which kind I mean? They are black but have those neon greens and pinks that really shine under a black light? Well, Bob just associated Led Zeppelin with this guy and considers the band trashy. His nose actually scrunches up when the band comes on. Makes me sad because I really like their music.
        Yeah, the kids are definitely keeping me busy, that’s for sure! The school year is just a few weeks away – whew! I hope the testosterone rages ease up for you soon and Ben gets some more sleep – because then everyone can get some more sleep!

    1. Yay! A fellow fan!🥳🎶💃🏼 I was cheating and being lazy by including my personal stuff with the SLS prompt😂 I need to write 2 separate posts so the SLS group don’t have to wade thru my drama to get to the tunes😉
