#SLS ~ Mishaps and Oopsies

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. A short Casa Cuckoo update this week. Ben isn’t sleeping well, so I’m barely sleeping. This is his last week of school, then he’s home for three weeks. I foresee a very frazzled, very exhausted Grandma when school resumes. On with the music!

The prompt this week is mine – Illness, Injury, Scars (we all know how often I find creative ways to injure myself)

I thought about using Disturbed Down With The Sickness or the awesome cover by Richard Cheese (gotta love that name). I also thought of using Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger, but finally decided to go with my first thought. The song I chose is Under Your Scars by Godsmack, written by singer Sully Erna, from their 2018 album When Legends Rise.

The band is Sully Erna – Vocals, Rhythm guitar, Piano, Producer… Tony Rombola – Lead guitar… Robbie Merrill – Bass… Shannon Larkin – Drums… With Zvezdelina Haltakova on violin and Irina Chirkova on cello

Songfacts tells us that Godsmack achieved a career first when Under Your Scars ascended to #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, marking the group’s third chart-topping Mainstream Rock hit from When Legends Rise, following the title track and Bulletproof. This was the first time the band scored three #1 singles from the same album.

The tune also inspired the band to launch The Scars Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides resources for issues like severe depression, addiction, bullying, PTSD, and suicide prevention.

Sully says he got the idea for the song after hanging out with his friend Stefani aka Lady Gaga. He realized that Scars are not something to hide, but something to be proud of cuz they’re reminders of things we’ve been through, both physically and emotionally/psychologically.

I’ve been a Godsmack fan since their song Voodoo was all over the radio in 1997. This song, Under Your Scars, is different from their previous work. It’s a little softer and more of a ballad, but it still has that Godsmack sound. We all have scars… I have a bazillion, both visible and invisible… and I think it’s very cool that Sully and the band started a foundation to help people.

Do we make sense? I think we do
In spite of everything that we’ve been through
Oh when you say black and I say white
It’s not about who’s wrong as long as it feels right
Don’t think those stars won’t align

Under your scars I pray
You’re like a shooting star in the rain
You’re everything that feels like home to me, yeah
Under your scars, I could live inside you time after time
If you’d only let me live inside of mine
Live inside of mine

Wish you were here right beside me
So I could watch you sleep
Hold your body closer, breathe you deep
And everything feels broken when you’re not next to me
Would you still be you if we weren’t we?

Under your scars I pray
You’re like a shooting star in the rain
You’re everything that feels like home to me, yeah
Under your scars, I could live inside you time after time
If you’d only let me live inside of mine

So hey, if you feel like coming down
If you feel like coming around
Just call my name out loud, na, na, na
Hey, if you feel like coming down
If you feel like coming around
Just call my name out loud, na, na, na, hey

Under your scars I pray
You’re like a shooting star in the rain
You’re everything that feels like home to me, yeah
Under your scars, I could live inside you time after time
If you’d only let me live inside of mine
Live inside of mine

Are you a fan of Godsmack? What song would you chose for this prompt? Are you like me, finding creative ways to injure yourself? I once liver-punched myself on a wrought-iron fence when I randomly fell onto it. Care to share a story? Thanks for stopping by!

HUGS!!

      1. You’re welcome! Right now I struggle to sleep because of my foot surgery, I don’t get any exercise at all. Hopefully when the doctor allows me to walk on that foot, things will get better. Thanks

  1. I’ll be honest with you: I’d never heard of Godsmack before. That is probably due to the fact that their appearance in the UK charts amounts to the square root of diddly squat: just one album, which reached the dizzy heights of #154 (I looked them up!). I rather like this song, though.

      1. As I’ve just said in reply to your comment on my post I’m enjoying finding bands like this that I’ve not heard of before, and SLS is widening my horizons! It just goes to show how much good music passes us by!

    1. Godsmack is on the heavier side of rock. You probably heard “Voodoo” at some point, I swear it was EV-ER-Y-WHERE for a while.

I’m glad you enjoyed the prompt. I’m enjoying the different songs that people have chosen. Like your choice of Ruby. It’s new to me😲 🥳🎶💃🏼🦋💖

  2. I had never heard Under Your Scars. I like it very much and the reassuring message it offers. And how neat that the band launched such a great and much needed resource! I sure hope you can get in some Angie time before school lets out on break! Hugs and all good things to you and yours 🤗❤️✨🌷🎶… p.s. no new scars this week 😉!

    1. I’m trying to avoid new scars, but I don’t generally PLAN on getting them in the first place😂😂 Surgical scars would be the exception, of course😉

I keep reminding myself that Ben was home much longer in 2020, I should be able to handle 3 weeks, right?! 🤪😱😂

I’m glad you enjoyed the song too🥳🎶💃🏼🤗🥰

  3. This is a nice song. I’m never heard of Godsmack. Is it a christian play on words of the term gobsmack? If yes, that’s clever. I hate operating on insufficient sleep. The only time I really had to do that is when my kids were babies. Now whenever I see a family walk by with little ones, I immediately feel for their lack of sleep. I hope things improve with Ben, but this has been pretty constant as long as I’ve known you right? Coffee is your friend. This theme actually makes me want to play the game for real. I would pick ‘And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda’. I know the song through the Pogues but I’ve learned recently that it’s a song that lots of folk singers and pretty much everyone in Australia has recorded. Never had a song so clearly illustrate the futility of war.

    1. Write it up if you have time. You don’t have to link it. I know that you and Jim have had your differences, but I bet your readers would enjoy it!

Ben has had sleep issues since birth. He never napped and when he was a toddler he would wander around the house whining and bumping into stuff but wouldn’t or couldn’t be still long enough to sleep.

When he was about two years old we begged his pediatrician for something to help him sleep. We were already past max dosage on melatonin and Benadryl wasn’t working either.

She gave him clonidine, which is a blood pressure med. It helped. Now he takes a handful and still only sleeps 5 or 6 hours. I thought teens liked to sleep at least 10??

His doctor won’t give him anything different and he’s “maxed out” on all his meds (according to her) so we’re chronically exhausted. Me being an insomniac doesn’t help either.

I think with Ben, it’s his ADHD that causes it. The first time he took the right amount of Adderall, he fell asleep😂

I’m super happy to see “tough guys” in a hard rock band talking about mental health issues, and DOING something to help. Having mental illness is no different from having physical illness and I’m glad people are starting to realize this and the stigma is lessening!

  4. I have heard of Godsmack and I am sure that I head them on the radio. They do have a nice sound. I have never seen a purpose in trying to injure myself, but from what I read, a lot of people do that.

    1. I guess people self-harm as a way to deal with mental health issues. I’ve never done it, but know people who have.
I am a klutz and trip over my own feet, or stub my toes on things, bang into door frames walking through… 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 I don’t do it on purpose, but I seem to find creative ways to get hurt🤦🏼‍♀️😂😂

I’m glad you liked the song!🥳🎶💃🏼

    1. Yes, please 🙏!! I still look forward to the GLYSB, but it’s fraught with stress these days. Ben has adopted a new routine that involves going out in the back yard, Scripting something, (I can’t figure out what exactly) then going up the tree… all before he’s willing to go wait for the bus. He has almost missed it twice🤦🏼‍♀️ We give him plenty of time, plenty of warnings, plus bribe him with cookies and candy just to get him to go wait.
He absolutely HAS to do the entire routine beforehand.

So yeah… GLYSB takes him away for a few hours, but I’m generally using that time for errands🤪 And I don’t know why his sleep is such a big thing again. I remember my kids wanted MORE sleep as teens, but Ben seems to want Less🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m just trying to get thru each day… looking at Sunsets, Sunrises and talking to birds. There’s a Hummingbird that’s been playing “peek-a-boo” with me lately. It Flys over the house by the tree, hovers, then back over the house. I got one not great picture, but you know how fast Hummingbirds are. He’s not out there EVERY sunset, but 3 out of 5 I’d say. It’s cute, and it lifts my spirits and helps my Zen😉

  5. My only scar is on my tummy from giving birth. It is a huge long stretch mark and is not attractive, so I never wear a bikini. I’m guessing I got it from giving birth at home and did most of the prelabor stuff on my own. Towards the end, my mother’s best friend Virginia came into my bedroom and stayed with me until the fireman got there. My mother had never given birth to her kids naturally. We were all born by cesarean, so she asked her best friend to come over. Also, my mother’s car was having issues, so she thought they could put me in her car to take me to the hospital. I was wayyyy tooo farrrr along and couldn’t even put on a jacket, so it’s a good thing we didn’t drive to the hospital. Three pushes and he was out. No anesthetic. I was 2 1/2 weeks overdue and it was Super Bowl Sunday. My mother told me the night before she had plans to go to a party that day. (She actually still went.) Unbelievable.
    Sorry for the rant.
Hope you can take Ben to the pool to keep cool the next three weeks. My kids always loved swimming.
    Hugs
    Teri

    1. He flipped the script last night and stayed awake until 2am, then got up at 6am with no problem 🤦🏼‍♀️ Summer Break for 3 weeks starts after today. I am determined to get his sleep sorted! His teacher let’s him sleep at school and it throws everything off. Easier for her… GRRR!!!

When does your crew start back? I can’t believe Ben is going to be in 9th grade😲 We are going thru the high school district now. He’s staying at his same school though. Thank goodness. Now if we could just get a new teacher…

      🤗🥰🥱🥱🤯🤷🏼‍♀️
