#SLS ~ Life Lessons

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Ben is on Summer Break and our unusually mild weather has turned hot and humid. We can get occasional humidty, but not every day… it’s gross, though it does make magnificent sunrises and sunsets! I don’t know how you folks who deal with it every year can stand it. It would be nice if we got some rain, but so far only about a dozen drops fell on one day. Ben seems to be getting into a little better sleep routine, but now I’ve got Sophie Cat wanting to cuddle every night, and she makes me hot. I wake up drenched in sweat several times a night. We can’t afford to run our window AC units 24/7, plus the noise gets to me after a while, so I guess I’m just doomed to poor, interrupted sleep. Yeah… cry me a river, right?! Let’s just get on with the Music!

The prompt words this week – Educate, Learn, School, Teach

This was an easy choice for me. Alanis Morissette released the album Jagged Little Pill in 1995 and every song on that album is great! I chose her song You Learn which was written by Alanis and producer Glen Ballard. This song reached #6 in the US and #24 in the UK.

Alanis is Canadian and has been acting and singing since she was a child. I learned from Songfacts that she dated Ryan Reynolds from 2002-2007. He was the first romantic partner she lived with – they both had houses in Vancouver, so they merged into one. This was before he was super famous.

Something else I learned about Alanis is that we are both Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP). It’s not all woo woo, New Age stuff. There is science that shows that our brains are wired differently. If you think you might be a HSP, there’s a quiz at the site… just click the link. Alanis made a documentary with Dr Elaine Aron that explains about HSPs too.

I think my favorite role I’ve seen her in was “God” in the Kevin Smith movie Dogma. It has an outstanding cast and I love the humor in Kevin Smith movies. Jay and Silent Bob crack me up!

I recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone
Yeah, oh
I recommend walking around naked in your living room
Yeah

Swallow it down (What a jagged little pill)
It feels so good (Swimming in your stomach)
Wait until the dust settles

You live, you learn
You love, you learn
You cry, you learn
You lose, you learn
You bleed, you learn
You scream you learn

I recommend biting off more than you can chew to anyone
I certainly do
I recommend sticking your foot in your mouth at any time
Feel free

Throw it down (The caution blocks you from the wind)
Hold it up (To the rays)
You wait and see when the smoke clears

You live, you learn
You love, you learn
You cry, you learn
You lose, you learn
You bleed, you learn
You scream, you learn

Wear it out (The way a three-year-old would do)
Melt it down (You’re gonna have to eventually anyway)
The fire trucks are coming up around the bend

You live, you learn
You love, you learn
You cry, you learn
You lose, you learn
You bleed, you learn
You scream, you learn

You grieve, you learn
You choke, you learn
You laugh, you learn
You choose, you learn
You pray, you learn
You ask, you learn
You live, you learn

.

Are you a fan of Alanis Morissette? Have you seen Dogma? What song would you choose for this prompt? Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Darn it. I lost the comment I was painstakingly typing into my phone. This time I’m skipping the bit about humidity and I’m going right to the music. That little pill album was pretty amazing. From my perspective she fell off the face of the earth after that, I never heard about her again. I gather she’s had a long and varied career since.

      1. I saw The Wall at a midnight showing. I admit to being under the influence of pre-legalization cannabis at the time of viewing, and yeah… impactful is a good word.
The entire album is just so sad! The line “Mother did it need to be so high” gets me every time 😒

    1. She took a bunch of time off to be a wife and mother. I didn’t read her entire history. I know she released new material within the past year or twoπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

I did watch the documentary a while ago when Robyn first brought up HSP. It explained SOOO much.

I don’t know how you’ve lived your entire life in humidity. I guess central air is standard in climates like that. We had to buy each of our window units. πŸ™„

  2. I like Alanis Morisette but I haven’t seen Dogma and I actually didn’t know she acted at all. Very cool. 🎢✨. I’m so sorry about the heat and humidity. That’s just plain lousy! And thanks for the quiz, I’m off to check it out. πŸŒΈπŸ’•πŸͺ·πŸŒ·πŸŽΆπŸ€—

    1. We’ve actually had a relatively mild summer so far, and we do get humidity when the “monsoonal moisture” hits in August, but it’s not usually every day.
That seems to be the new reality with the weather… everything is more extreme☹️ I’m starting to think Sven has the right idea… that brumating during Summer instead of Winter is the way to go. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  3. Love Alanis Morisette.

Glad Ben is back at school. Hope you are getting some much needed rest.
We are back from vacation w Ken’s family. Trying to get around to writing another blog. Been cooking, baking, gardening and spending time with the chickens.
Also had a huge party here to celebrate my sister’s 60th two days after we returned.

Plus my husband’s birthday is this week and I need to make reservations somewhere. My boys will be taking time to spend the day with us also. Why am I such a bad planner? I always wait until the last minute. Trying to convince Andrew’s girlfriend to come as well. It’s tricky. She avoids many outings with us. I guess she has anxiety issues and gets tired easily. I don’t like to put pressure on her, but want her to feel invited and loved. We’ll see if she comes.

Good to hear from you Angie.
