#SLS ~ Zero Calorie Sweets

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. I thought since Jim was kind enough to use my prompt suggestion, I’d better make the extra effort this week. I’ve been mostly absent from WP for nearly a month now. Life at the Casa has been more Cuckoo and I’m too exhausted to do more than check in here and there. I seem to be in “Spoon” debt, and may have to file “Spoon Bankruptcy” and reorganize. Anywho… let’s get on with the Music!

The prompt words this week – Sweet, Honey, Sugar, Candy, Chocolate

I went with the song that inspired the suggested prompt words. Lips Like Sugar by Echo & The Bunnymen, from their 1987 self-titled record. The song never charted in the US, but it reached #36 in the UK.

Writing credit for Lips Like Sugar goes to all four band members. They were originally three guys from Liverpool with a drum machine, until Pete joined the band.

IAN STEPHEN MCCULLOCH (vocals)
LESLIE THOMAS PATTINSON (bass)
PETE DE FREITAS(drums)
WILLIAM SERGEANT(guitar)

Lips Like Sugar has become their best known and liked song in the US, but it wasn’t a favorite of singer, Ian’s. Per Songfacts, the song is one of many UK hits for the band, and one lead singer Ian McCulloch would rather skip. “It was an OK song, I suppose, but it didn’t sound like us,” he told Q magazine in 1992. “We just got sucked into a new mentality on that last album, the sound of Radio America.”

I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan, but I like their music well enough. This song tends to pull up a chair and stay awhile, so you’ve been warned.

She floats like a swan
Grace on the water
Lips like sugar
Lips like sugar
Just when you think you’ve caught her
She glides across the water
She calls for you tonight
To share this moonlight

You’ll flow down her river
She’ll ask and you’ll give her
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses

She knows what she knows
I know what she’s thinking
Sugar kisses
Sugar kisses
Just when you think she’s yours
She’s flown to other shores
To laugh at how you break
And melt into this lake

You’ll flow down her river
But you’ll never give her
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses

She’ll be my mirror
Reflect what I am
A loser and a winner
The King of Siam
And my Siamese twin
Alone on the river
Mirror kisses
Mirror kisses

Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
(×3)

Are you a fan of Echo & The Bunnymen? What song would you choose for this prompt? There’s a grip of choices out there, isn’t there?! Thanks for stopping by!

HUGS!!

  1. Since I’m in the midst of an Iggy Pop podcast, I’d probably pick Candy (with Kate Pierson). My experience with Iggy is mostly his unlikely hits–lust for life, wild child & candy. Although I’m a huge fan of his song Repo Man (from the Repo Man soundtrack). I never had all that much exposure to Echo. I actually didn’t know that Lips Like Sugar was by them although I like it well enough. The only song that really ever grabbed me was Do It Clean (I really like that one).

  2. Thanks for the warning! It is a great song and I like the video too. Echo and the Bunnymen are pretty cool. I still miss the original MTV! Hope the echos around you settle down and you have a bunny hoppin good week ahead. Hugs! 🤗💕

  3. Very upset at this news, but l totally understand, l am going to miss you. I can relate on a different level. I have such a lot going on of late and my physical health took a downward swing this last week and it’s not improving. I can feel something inside my upper stomach which is a little unsettling.

I will try harder to email more on a regular basis.

  4. I don’t know this one but I like the sound. I’m sorry you’re having a tough time right now. Thinking of you and sending some hugs. Hope you can take a break soon!

  5. I love this song!! Hey girl! I’ve been missing you ❤ I’m here, up to my neck in 2022 lol. But I think about you a whole lot! A witty DJ once said (about this song) “There is no Echo and there are no bunnypeople”, tongue in cheek lol. Love and hugs mi hermana cosmica! ❤
