#SLS ~ Life In Hell

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Head over to Jim’s site where you can find all the rules and future topics or prompt words. Have a look around, you can also find lots of other cool posts.

Today’s subject is Heaven/Hell and I’m going with the first song that came to mind, Hell Is For Children by Pat Benatar.

It was written by Pat Benatar, guitarist (and future husband) Neil Giraldo, and bassist Roger Capps. Pat Benatar started writing the song after reading about child abuse in the New York Times. She grew up in a very happy home, in a sheltered neighborhood, and had no idea that child abuse was so prevelant. She was so upset that she not only wrote the song, she also started a foundation to prevent child abuse, funded by publishing royalties from this song.

The song was included on her second studio album, Crimes Of Passion, which was released August 5, 1980. Although the song was never released as a single, it got a lot of airplay on FM Rock stations.

On a personal note, Pat Benatar has always been a favorite of mine. Pat Benatar was my first concert. If you’re interested, you can read about it here.

They cry in the dark
So you can’t see their tears
They hide in the light
So you can’t see their fears

Forgive and forget
All the while
Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child

Because hell, hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn’t have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh

It’s all so confusing this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes and then apologize
Be daddy’s good girl, and don’t tell mommy a thing
Be a good little boy, and you’ll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell from the swing

Because hell, hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn’t have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh
No, hell is for children

Hell, hell is for hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for children

Hell, hell is for hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for children

Hell, hell is for hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for children

Hell is for children
Hell is for children
