#SLS ~ Fate Smiled…

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. All the rules, and future themes are at Jim’s site. Why not have a look around when you visit, there are other prompts, and other musical themed posts, as well as short fiction.

The theme this week is – Fate, Fortune, Luck.

As usual, I had several songs pop into my head. My first thought was Sister Luck by the Black Crowes, but I’ve used them before, and may have used that song… I’m too lazy to check. The next song that came to mind has been played often lately by the DJ In My Head. Yep! That’s the one to go with.

Wonder was written by Natalie Merchant, and it was the second single from her 1995 first solo album, Tigerlily. Wonder reached number twenty on Billboard’s Hot 100, and number two on Billboard’s Adult Top 40.

Before embarking on her solo career, Natalie Merchant was the lead singer for the band 10,000 Maniacs from 1981 until 1993. She went solo to have more creative control.

Per SongfactsWhen she was a teenager, Natalie Merchant worked at a day camp for special needs children, many of whom had been institutionalized since infancy and abandoned by their parents. This song was inspired by that experience.

That bit of info was new to me. Most of you know that King Ben is autistic. He has very high support needs, and may never lead an independent life. The lyrics have a deeper meaning to me now, I have a new appreciation for a song that I already really liked.

Doctors have come from distant cities
Just to see me
Stand over my bed
Disbelieving what they’re seeing

They say I must be one of the wonders
God’s own creation
And as far as they see they can offer
No explanation

Newspapers ask intimate questions
Want confessions
They reach into my head
To steal the glory of my story

They say I must be one of the wonders
God’s own creation
And as far as they see they can offer
No explanation

O, I believe
Fate smiled and destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience and with faith
She’ll make her way,
She’ll make her way!

People see me
I’m a challenge to your balance
I’m over your heads
How I confound you and astound you
To know I must be one of the wonders
God’s own creation
And as far as you see you can offer me
No explanation

O, I believe
Fate smiled and destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as she came to my mother
Know this child will not suffer
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience and with faith
She’ll make her way!
She’ll make her way!
She’ll make her way!
