Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. Have you been to Jim’s site yet? There’s lots of music to go along with his writing. The official rules and upcoming prompts are there too.
The theme this week is Breakup Songs. I had a very difficult time choosing a song. I had about ten different songs that came to mind, but none of them seemed just right to me. I didn’t want a “broken heart” song. They’re fine, I’ve got nothing against them, but I was thinking about the end of my marriage, and I wasn’t broken hearted… I was finally free from the torture of Domestic Violence. It was thirteen years ago last Sunday actually. You can read about here if you’re interested.
Daughter kept telling me to use Kelly Clarkson’s song, and it’s great, but something in me said “Nope!” I decided to go with REO Speedwagon and Time For Me To Fly because it’s about being free from a bad relationship.
The song was written by lead singer Kevin Cronin. It’s about his first love from high school. He went away to see a friend in Colorado to give himself some space from the girl. He was playing around with a guitar that was there, but the tuning was weird, and it sounded awful. He remembered seeing someone wrap their thumb around the neck, so he tried it, and it worked! (I always wondered why he played like that.)
The song is from their 1978 album titled You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can’t Tuna Fish. (That title always cracks me up) It reached number fifty-six on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
I’ve been around for you
Been up and down for you
But I just can’t get any relief
I’ve swallowed my pride for you
I’ve lived and lied for you
But you still make me feel like a thief
You got me stealing your love away
‘Cause you never give it
Peeling the years away
And we can’t relive it
Oh, I make you laugh
And you make me cry
I believe it’s time for me to fly
You said we’d work it out
You said that you had no doubt
That deep down we were really in love
Oh, but I’m tired of holding on
To a feeling I know is gone
I do believe that I’ve had enough
I’ve had enough of the falseness
Of a worn-out relation
Enough of the jealousy
And the intoleration
Oh, I make you laugh
And you make me cry
I believe it’s time for me to fly
Time for me to fly
Oh, I’ve got to set myself free
(Time for me to fly)
And that’s just how it’s got to be
I know it hurts to say goodbye
But it’s time for me to fly
Oh, don’t you know it’s time for me to fly
Oh, I’ve got to set myself free
(Time for me to fly)
Oh, babe, that’s just how it’s got to be
I know it hurts to say goodbye
But it’s time for me to fly
It’s time for me to fly
It’s time for me to fly
(It’s time for me to fly)
It’s time for me to fly
(It’s time for me to fly)
It’s time for me to fly
(It’s time for me to fly)
It’s time for me to fly
I admit after more than twenty years, and two children together, there was some pain in the ending. I put a lot of work into my marriage, but it was time for me, and my daughters, to be free. Do you have a favorite breakup song? Let me know what song you would’ve used, or why not create your own #SLS post. Thanks for stopping by!
