#SLS ~ Lucky?

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. For those interested in Casa Cuckoo news, I shall try to be brief. I’ve had swelling, then discoloration in my left foot and lower leg for 2-3 weeks. I hadn’t injured the foot or ankle so I had no idea what the cause was. I had been bitten, probably by a spider, possibly a Black Widow cuz we have them everywhere here, but that was weeks before, and had healed, though slowly. With the car accident drama, and Daughter and her Bronchitis, and Ben with his gut bug, my foot was low priority. It wasn’t really painful, mostly stiff and annoying. After it started turning bright red, then purple, I called my Primary Doctor who couldn’t see me til the following week. This was this past Tuesday. I tried calling Monday but the answering service kept taking the calls and they can’t make appointments. Anyway, another week didn’t seem like a good idea, so I showed up at Urgent Care when they opened at 8am on Wednesday. After waiting an hour, the doctor told me I might have an infection, or I might have a blood clot. I should go to Emergency at the hospital cuz Urgent Care can’t check for blood clot. So I stopped by the house, informed Daughter, made a “reservation” (what a joke!) at the Emergency Department and headed over. I was there for over 5 hours, spent most of that time sitting in the waiting room because they didn’t have any beds available, was examined by the doctor in the waiting room, and was occasionally transported by wheelchair for blood draws, x-rays, and some super fancy ultrasound of my leg to look for blood clots, then back to the waiting room in between each test. Two hours after the final test they checked my billing info and sent me to a cubicle in a corner for final vital signs and for the doctor to tell me what was up. Finally about 30 minutes later, the doctor told me it was Cellulitis, a skin infection and she called in, or sent in via interwebs, a prescription for clindamycin. I was so happy to finally leave! But I couldn’t find my stupid car in the structure. I nearly broke down and cried at that point. I was Soooo DONE and I just wanted to go home. Sitting upright is painful for me. I spend at least 75% of my time horizontal. So the long wait on top of the wait at Urgent Care earlier, had my pain flared immensely! And to top it off, the pharmacy had to order the med, so I picked it up Thursday afternoon. I also discovered my blinkers on my car aren’t working, and I’m kinda anal about using my blinkers. Plus, the duct tape holding the bumper on isn’t doing so well in the heat of the sun, so I had to call my insurance and file a claim after all. GRRRR! Sorry, that wasn’t very brief, was it?!๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

On with the prompt and the music!

The prompt words this week – Money, Gold, Silver, Rich

I seriously considered using Gold Dust Woman, but thought someone else (Paula) would grab that for sure, so I went with an old favorite. Lucky Man written by Greg Lake and performed by Emmerson, Lake and Palmer or ELP.

Lucky Man is from ELP’s self-titled debut album, released in 1970. The song only reached #48 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list in the US.

Songfacts tells us that Greg Lake wrote the song when he was 12 years old on a broken guitar with one string. He later got a guitar for Christmas and added a few chords to the song.

When ELP was recording their first album, they were short of the contractually required twenty-one minutes per side, so the guys stood around asking each if they had anything else. Lake told about the song he wrote when he was 12. Keith Emmerson told him to record it on his own, he was going to the pub, and left.

Carl Palmer stuck around and played drums and at first it wasn’t very good.  Lake added bass and more guitar, then harmonies and it kept getting better. After the guitar solo was added, they were satisfied they’d created a good song.

The end of this song contains one of the most famous Moog synthesizer solos in rock history. Keith Emerson had just recently gotten the device, and only decided to play on this song after hearing the track Lake and Palmer recorded, when he got back from the pub, and realizing it was a legitimate song.

He had white horses
And ladies by the score
All dressed in satin
And waiting by the door

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

White lace and feathers
They made up his bed
A gold covered mattress
On which he was led

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

He went to fight wars
For his country and his king
Of his honor and his glory
The people would sing

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
No money could save him
So he laid down and he died

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

Are you a fan of ELP, or this song? What song would you choose for this prompt? Let me know in comments or create your own post. I always learn something new when I write about the song I’ve chosen, and I get to hear new, or new to me, music from other folks or get reminded of old favorites! That’s why I love this prompt and try to make it here every Sunday, even when the Cuckoo at the Casa seems to be on hyperdrive. Thanks for stopping by!
